As for valve tappet rattle for a second or two after a cold start, mine has always done that. I'm told it's normal by my mechanic.
My alternator failed at about 47,000 miles. My guess is that they normally last a bit longer than that, but you never really know. When and if it does fail, have a reputable shop find a rebuilt one and prepare to spend more than $500 for the replacement and install. Those buggers are expensive on these cars.
