FireFox blows, too. At least version 2.0 does. 3 should be awesome.
But, what you're likely experiencing is the way the page is coded coupled with the way the IE engine renders things. I think the way IE works is that it has to get done with one part before it renders another, so it could be waiting on an ad server, analytics server, or a bunch of other things.
You likely won't have the same problem in FF (I don't, and others have said that they don't) but the memory management on FF is crazy and it tends to use a lot more RAM, if that's a concern for you. For example, FF right now for me is taking up about 140MB.
