For years now they've had much bigger ones that are not claustrophobic at all. I demanded one the last time I had an MRI. Had to drive across town, but was worth it.

Also, they now have them with one side open. Not a tube, a long letter 'C'. For a couple years now.

See if you can move to another tube..
The larger bores and/or open units have their uses. They do not give as good of images, in general, as the closed systems. The open systems- and I own one, certainly have their uses but are not inherently better than the closed bores. The scanning time on the open systems also tends to be longer. To simplify a complex topic we are turning your body into a radiofrequency generator. The closer I can get my antennas, the higher my signal. The closed systems also tend to be stronger magnets- usually about 1.5T, the open systems tend to be below 0.7T or so- although there are exceptions. Again, the higher the magnetic field, the stronger the signal and the better the image.
Just keep your eyes closed, and the vast majority of people do fine. They are loud as crap- you probably will not hear a lot of your music even with a music system.
