Dan, I had a '95 (E34) 540 6 speed, it was a awesome car. Very smooth V8, with torque everywhere. Handled nice, so it was fun around town, but the highway is really it's element. I got 25 MPG pretty easily on the highway, I think the E39 gets more like 27. Comfy inside, with space for 4 adults. Great cars, I miss mine.
Look for cooling system replacement (radiator, water pump, often expansion tank) around 100k, that's about all they last. Suspension bushings about the same time, especially in front.
