If the logic board has "bulging capacitors", stand firm and make Apple pay because this was a known issue.
Thanks for the info! I like the external fan idea and may persue it if I can get this thing running.

So yesterday I took the iMac home to see what's up. The machine has 2 1-GB RAM chips installed the original owner said they checked out with whatever test he ran. The hard drive has been slicked. I powered the machine up, it did the Apple chime, and the animated folder indicating no Mac OS found appeared. I let it run like that until about 3 minutes in the cooling fans kicked into high speed (LOUD) and the machine locked up (no more animated folder). I powered down with the rear switch, waited 10 seconds and repeated. This time the machine locked up immediately after the Apple chime.

I have a question about Apple service. I found that the machine may qualify for a free repair through this EMC bulletin. Does anyone know if I need the original sales receipt to make this happen? Do I need to make an appointment with the local Apple store or can I just walk in? Finally, do third party repair places do warranty work?
