I beg to differ. My 1602 (with a 2002 motor) was built like a (little) tank, ran like a watch and required little maintenance (in four years of ownership, I only had to replace the MC). It was lowered and handled like a go-cart. You couldn't bring the ass-end around if you tried.
Working on the motor was a pleasant experience as there is plenty of room under the cowl. The only common rust issues are @ the tops of the shock towers.
Furthermore, BMW still supports their vintage vehicles, so many, many parts are still available on-line and/or through the dealerships. When I go to Porsche inquiring about parts for my '79 & '71, I get the "sucking on a dog-doo flavored Lifesaver" look from the counter guy...
