In the purest sense (which mean only absolute whack jobs care about the difference) a boxer engine has opposing cylinders where the pistons reach TDC at the same time. Meaning that the fists of the boxers hit each other simultaneously.
A 180V is a horizontally opposed engine where the pistons share the same crank pin and therefore reach TDC at exactly opposite time. The fists of the "boxers" would be trading blows as opposed to striking each other at the same time.
Ironically, the Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer actually has a 180degree V 12 and not a traditional boxer engine. The Boxster however, is appropriately named.
Most "normal" people would consider both engines boxers.
