Love it, although it's been too long.
Many years ago (okay, 1999) when we moved out here to Kalifornia, we passed through Sedona on the way to Phoenix and the west coast. Spent a couple days there camping and stuff. It gets HOT (camping in Arizona in the summer - no kiddin' right?) But it's a breathtaking place.
I didn't need no "Pink Jeep" tours - we sort of accidentally stumbled upon an off-road route down the elevation change called "Old Snebley Road" which years ago used to be the only way into and out of Sedona. It's beaten up badly now with lots of ruts, divots, etc. but absolutely sublime. Great drive, great views, simply breathtaking in places. But you damn well better have 4WD and high ground clearance. Getting close to the bottom we saw those Pink Jeeps going up (apparently the lower portion of that road is part of their route) packed full of tourists looking at us like we were absolutely nuts. Heh heh heh. We just passed 'em and kept right on rolling along like it was no big deal. Fun times.
A few years ago I stopped there with a friend in a rented Piper Seminole to get gas/lunch whilst flying back from a "time building" trip to Dallas. Very fun/exciting airport to fly in and out of. Absolute blast. I don't think I've ever flown into anywhere else where I swear I was literally dodging pillars of rock on my downwind leg. Oh, and it gets windy.
The mountain biking opportunities there are great. I found an old "pioneer era" graveyard while out biking (no joke) with sun-bleached headstones from the 1800s. Looks like it had been forgotten for many, many years. Pretty surreal - I bet I was the only one to have seen it in years. Kinda' put my "trip out west" in perspective. Makes one appreciate modern vehicles and interstate travel. I don't know the story of the two folks buried in that old graveyard, but I imagine they were "headed west" back when it was difficult, challenging and dangerous and that they didn't make it. Who knows - pretty interesting place though.
