I have a set of city bags and larger covers for my S but seldom use them.
I actually prefer a backpack for day trips. (up to 500 miles or so) Perfect for my lunch. I generally use a small one and don't even notice it there. I would not recommend carrying tools or any sharp or heavy items in one though.
Tank bags are nice but they do a number on your paint after a while.
