I have a feeling that Boxster owners don't need to spend too much time under their cars. Most of us are getting out there and driving them.
I think the consensus would be to get as new of a boxster as you can afford. I have a 2000 Box with the 2.7 engine and I'm very happy with it. The first versions (97-99) had more problems but by 2000 most of the bugs had been worked out. 97-98 only had 2 year warranties whille 99 on has 4 years. Early version prices ($20,000-$30,000) do make them look very attractive. They are great cars to drive, to look at, and to fuss over (wash, clean, & polish).
I'm still having fun after 2 years.
I hope you find one.
