Among many other things, I've wondered why some folks report having never seen ghosts and some folks claim to have seen many. Is there a need to believe to make them detectable?

Okay. You asked for it. I really don't like sharing personal beliefs like this, but here goes...
Well, energy cannot be destroyed, it only changes forms, right? And our body's "higher brain functions" (ie consciousness) are basically electrical synapses (ie energy) that occur within our bodies, right? What happens when we pass on? This energy is released into, what, a collective unconscious? An energy field? The Tao? The Holy Spirit? The Force? The energy goes somewhere, and becomes part of something.
Perhaps it is no coincidence that the closest thing we have to "evidence" of "haunting" in supposedly "haunted' locations are registered on devices that measure various forms of energy: tape recorders, video recorders, cameras, thermometers.
I'm not saying that people are seeing the spirits of dead people; but people are seeing things that are measured by disruptions in energy fields. The scientific method fails us here, but the hypothesis that the energy of human consciousness and the energy measured before/after/during/at the location of disturbances are, in fact, connected seems like the best answer we've found yet. I'm no "New Age" freak, but my personal beliefs (a curious amalgam of Christianity, Taoism, and hard science) tend to skew toward this hypothesis.
