Have her buy an older used Civic, or Toyota Tercel (you can pay, but have her find it etc.). It will be a good learning experience. That should be pretty reliable, then have her donate it and the end of her time there. She will appreciate the tax write-off since she's young, and won't have many dedcutibles.
It sounds to me like you are going through way too much work, and that drive is going to suck. I have done it, twice, and unless you have some time to sightsee, it won't be much fun.
Also don't expect to get 50mpg on the highway in the Prius.
I still feel the same way as Clarkson about them too.
