Yes, they're just tubing. No shock safety in them. I don't think the tubes will effectively crush if impacted. The bend in the flat stock between the tubes and the square stock actually touches the chassis, and the flat stock is not all that rigid.
My front bar was a bit too narrow and I had to spread it open by standing on it and pulling up. I'm only 6'-0" and 165lb. I don't have incredible hulk strength so I don't think the nerf is a significant safety benefit. If something hits the square bar, it's going to push it into the chassis tub by bending the flat stock.
