I thought the conventional wisdom was that the VP was chosen to help get the votes in particular states, states needed to win the general election.

Say a candidate is slightly behind in Ohio, one of the few swing states. A VP who does well in Ohio would be chosen. This will give that candidate a greater chance of winning that particular swing state, thus helping with the overall electoral college vote.
