I have heard of some doing this in turbo diesels. I know it is not good to cut a turbo off when you are going 60 mph and letting it coast, (turbo gets no oil). On the vw diesels with the manual trans. when you let of the go pedal and the car is in gear the engine still runs but uses no fuel.
I have heard of them getting 800 to 900 mile on a tank of fuel, I only get about 630 before I chicken out.

Ummm, how can an engine run with no fuel?
