Not if he is under 30 years old and has a grasp of Australian history which is commensurate with a comparable American(ie, utterly clueless). It is entirely possible he had no idea this was the policy in the past.

Perhaps he is surprised that the US, which went through the Civil Rights Revolution over 40 years ago has not progressed more quickly. We have a black man on the SCOTUS, and have for a long time, we have a black woman as our secretary of state. WTF is wrong with us if we won't consider a black man for POTUS?

I have lived here all my life, am relatively erudite and intelligent, but often find race relations in this country baffling.

BTW, the color of his skin has nothing to do with why I would never vote for Mr Obama
