I was watching the tube and they said that something like 20% of the population has Herpes. I thought that had to be an overstatement! I guess not!
I guess Paris Hilton isn't alone in taking Valtrex!

- Only about 20% of people infected with the herpes simplex virus are diagnosed.
Medline Plus Health Information, 2006. - While statistics vary, research shows that 90% of the population has been exposed to HSV-1, "oral herpes", and 25% of the population aged 25-45 years old in the United States has been exposed to infection with HSV-2, "genital herpes".
- Americans aged 14 to 49 who tested positive for herpes 2 infection fell by a relative rate of 19 percent between 1988 and 2004.
- People aged 14 to 19 who tested positive for herpes simplex 2 dropped from 5.8 percent in the 1988-1994 survey to just 1.6 percent 10 years later.
- People with herpes simplex virus type 1 also decreased -- from 62 percent in 1988-1994 to 57.7 percent in 1999-2004, a relative decline of 6.9 percent.
- Both forms of herpes still affect millions of people in the United States. Overall, the prevalence is 17 percent -- that means one in six Americans are still infected with this virus.
- HSV-1 is causing more genital herpes than ever before. About 2% of people with HSV-1 infection -- but not HSV-2 -- have genital herpes.
