I believe he was referring to corn anyways. The scam is that you burn more fossil fuel per gallon with corn than you do a petroleum product.

There are many cars here in this big city that are burning vegetable oil from various sources. There was a big Dodge pickup for sale near here that got 22 mpg. on peanut oil. Needless to say, that vehicle didn't last a week for sale before it was bought. So it's not so novel, and yes, it is one of many energy solutions.
The scam
is the petroleum products - at least it is today. No one says ethanol is better than gasoline. It is simply an alternative to gasoline - a very good alternative because, just like in the Lotus video, if the engine management is reprogrammed, the car can get virtually the same mileage with a good amount more power.
