Mrs Speedy here
We came very close to losing our kid's half Welsh pony due to founder (hoof inflammation) this winter. Caused by horsey diabetes. That was four sleepless nights for us, not to mention $400+ in farrier bills. But when your kid's feelings are involved (and I mean feelings of attachment, not I want the latest toy feelings) the checkbook gets squeezed...
My sincerest condolences... and it always seems to happen to the good ones. I hope your son does keep riding and learns how to get re-attached. I've been through a number of horses but bawled like a baby when I learned my 30+ 4-H horse, who I hadn't owned for 16 years, passed on. Good old Macho.
Your son will never forget this horse, and I know what he feels like. Poor little guy. this part of horsey love sucks.
