The camera is pretty old. I got it for Christmas 3 or 4 years ago. I don't mind spending bucks for an upgrade as long as I can make good pictures (need training).

There's only a handful of compact/ultra compact cameras that go wider than 28mm. The GX100 nostatic mentioned goes to 24mm (I own that camera). For similar money to that, you could get into a Nikon D40 with an 18-55mm lens for as little as $450 delivered. In many ways, it'll kick the ass of any compact. The Nikons are considered to have the best kit lenses.
