I use a messenger bag for most stuff (to/from work). Enough for everything I need on a day-in/day-out basis like notepad, sketch pad, check books, mobile phone, pens/pencils, eyeglasses (I wear contacts, so that's my "just in case" emergency reserve, wallet, keys, laptop, etc.

I hate crap in my pockets too. At least pants pockets. I keep those empty. Jacket pockets I'll put stuff like keys, wallet, sunglasses into if I have a jacket, but if not, I use the messenger bag (usually).
