That shim wassher, and the gear are supposed to be snug, up against the aluminum housing ... what you are calling the bearing ... isn't supposed to be sticking out at all! And the wear pattern on the distributor gear is supposed to be centered, and twice as wide as the pattern on yours!
If there is a dealer within a reasonable distance ... take the distributor to them and get their comments on the matter! I'm dead serious, your distributor is in SERIOUSLY BAD SHAPE!!!
