Laphroaig is damn good, but it lacks some of the subtlety of the higher end single malts. It's like an Austalian shiraz compared to a French bourdeaux. Both extremely good at what they do, but one packs a hell of a punch whereas the other's strength is in its subtleties.
However I would venture that Laphroaig is the absolute best value for single malts out there, at least of the ones I've tried.
