The point of insurance is to make you the same as you were before your accident. If you think it will take more than $500 to make you whole, ask for it, but also have a good reason for asking for it. "I want it" is not sufficient.
Or you can take soup's advice and perpetuate the mentality that getting in an accident is like winning the lottery and that you need to make those "evil insurance companies" pay. Thing is, they don't pay, you do, and everyone around you does--in higher rates based on claims experience. It is exactly this entitlement mentality that makes insurance so expensive in the first place and it is this expectation to get something for nothing that will be the death of society.
