The real issue is that we need to move away from oil use.
Secondarily, there just is not that much oil left off our own shores -- we've been taping it for a quite a few decades.
What oil _is_ left is not easy to get. It requires deep water drilling in many instances; and that ain't cheap.
The basic problem is not whether Florida and California restrict drilling off their coasts (leaving La. as the rig festooned state), it is the issues above.
And, yes, I've fished off of rigs and caught a lot of snapper - nothing new about that. Everybody has known it since at least the 1950s.
Our rigs are much safer than most, but an accident can still cause a great deal of pollution. Not to mention the problems when the oil comes ashore - some chronic and some only when there are big storms.
