I agree...perhaps he was upstaged by others in the cast of "The Hustler"...George C. Scott, Jackie Gleason, and Piper Laurie.
He'd never held a stick before shooting the movie. Gleason was a good pool shooter in his own right. Newman quickly picked up the nuances of stroke & aim thanks to "consultant" Willie Mosconi.
In "the color of money", Paul Newman had no worries of being upstaged by Tom Cruise.

But it was a flick with it's fun points for pool enthusiasts. The Character "Grady Seasons" was played by Keith McCready, a true to life top level player & hustler. And the character who said: "I didn't deserve that" after losing to Newman's character in the tournament? The late Great Steve Miserack...a many times world champion.
I'd suggest that "The Hustler" is an outstanding movie, whether the viewer is a pool player or not.
Can't say the same for "The color of Money"....
It really saddened me to hear that he has lung cancer. Great actor...and his long marriage serves as testimony that he has better values than many of the Hollyweird set.
