My understanding is that the problem with engine cases was not a crack, but more of a pinhole problem - casting flaws meaning oil would leak through seemingly solid metal. Was NOT a problem in '97, was a problem in '98.
The top problem was a microswitch, easy fix if you had the correct replacement part revision #.
Also don't forget the airbag light problem, the seatbelt wiring would go goofy and need replacing. Again, you had to get the right replacement part revision #.
There were a number of oil leak problems with '97s not related to engine cases. Bolts too long for their holes, oil breathers mounted horizontally instead of vertically, etc.
