I have a 2000 Jetta VR6. A big improvement in driving pleasure over my previous Accords and one Camry. It's quiet, handles solidly, and has plenty of smooth power. With 45K miles, not a single problem. I use it often as one would a pickup truck.
I don't think it matters where a car is built. It's all in the engineering. By assembly time, it's too late to make any difference.
