After seeing the previews for this episode, where they gave us a quick glimpse of D'anna and Roz standing on the planet, my wife and I discussed their finding earth. I told her that we don't know for sure that the planet IS earth, and even if it is we don't know if they are finding it in our distant past or our distant future.
Now with the radiation and destruction, I guess it's the future after either A) a nuclear war, or B) the bad cylons already nuked the planet.

I don't watch the show for life and morality lessons. That's what sounded the death knell for the show in season 2 and 3 - when they started moving to plot driven stories about worker rights and schit.
In the fall, we're going to find out that all of season 3 and 4 were simply one of Roz's chamilla visions and none of it happened. Like the infamous Dallas "dream season"
