The Porsche Factory Manuals specifically say that sealant remnants can be left in place. I suppose that residue will be solubilized by the new sealant and not present a problem.
On the other hand, those books were not for rebuilding 30-year-old engines. I'll be making sure the only sign of residue is discoloration.
