Porsche will put a V8 into a 911... eventually. It will probably be a couple of generations down the line, though.

Although consider this: although the current maximum smooth capacity for a six-cylinder engine is 3.8 liters, technology changes the game considerably. Back in the 1970s, do you think that they ever thought they would reliably run a 3.8 liter flat six in a production 911? In the early-1980s, the thinking was that 2.5 liters was pretty much the maximum capacity for four-cylinder engines....

For the record, I was not a fan of the 996 (mostly due to bodywork styling), but I absolutely adore typ 997, especially the "new" facelift version. Even the new steering wheel looks fantastic.
