Renting will probably be cheaper. If you watch it you should be able to get a $29.99 a day/$179.99 a week sort of deal. If you figure you'll lose a grand or two on the car purchase/resale deal, you can do an easy calculation to find out where your break even point is.
The best buying option would be to get a good deal on a small used car like a Camry from a private party, drive it and sell it on Crag's List when you get back home. But remember, you'll pay tax, title and license for a car you buy and sell.
