I know, if I were a murderer and knew the cops were either looking for me or my murder weapon, these gun buy-backs would be the perfect opportunity to unload incriminating evidence and make it permanently inadmissable in court. Given that possibility, I highly doubt there is any real immunity.

I recall a recent case like that. Turns out the guy turning in the murder weapon wasn't the murderer...says he "found" the gun. Still, I think a good defense attorney would have a field day with the "entrapment" angle.
