I was there (Encinitas/Leucadia) in the 80's/90's. It was laid back as it gets (I believe the population just broke 1 mil at that time...in an area the size of some small states - 65 miles from north to south, and 86 miles from east to west, covering 4,261 square miles). Never had any road-rage issues. Rarely saw confrontations in public (except in the surf) or bars. People were civil. Minimal redneck a-holes (you had to go to Dulzura or Lakeside to find 'em). Low crime rate. Possibly over-crowded now, I don't know. No more spring breaks in Ft. Lauderdale. The city put the kabosh on that in the mid 90's and the spring breakers moved to Daytona & Pensacola(?) and/or Panama City Beach. San Diego is Tijuana North as much as Miami is Cuba West.
