Its middle America stuff man... same with Bob Segar and Bruce... and the Eagles too. Billy Joel and Elton are the artsy stuff for middle America...
It is why country music is so big... its the mass appeal music for the mass audience consumption along with a 40 ouncer or two.
Man I grew up in Detroit and the 4 major FM stations played all of that stuff... Classic Rock 24/7 WCSX, its the WRRRIIIFFF baby!
As far as "emo" I had read that "Jimmy Eats....etc" was the band that started that genre about 10 years ago, so I listened to some of their cuts and didnt really like it...maybe they are not emo these days...anyway doesnt matter. let it rock!
