Sarc, I'd say that it was obviously not as sporty as the 540, but more comfortable. Smoother ride, lighter steering, the ride was controlled but not as tight as the 540. It wasn't sloppy, but there was a bit of body roll. Automatic transmission, obviously. Basically I can see it being a nice daily driver, but probably not a weekend fun run type car. The engines were both very responsive and smooth, thumbs up for both. The automatic wasn't the best I've driven, but was responsive and quick to downshift. Both the V6 and V8 didn't seem flatfooted, probably my biggest complaint with many automatics.
The best way to summarize it is that the MB puts luxury before sport. It's still sporty, but not to the extent of the BMW. To that end, it has more power stuff, more wood, and was overall more comfortable than my E34. Also seemed to be made with nicer materials, and the build quality was excellent, even on the trashed one. Ultra comfy seats. Overall I liked it, and it's probably more suited to the driving I really do. As much as I wish I went racing on the weekends, I don't. With that said, I'd have a hard time turning down a nice E34 540/6.
