I had something similar happen over the weekend, I was driving home when out of nowhere the car started shaking, sputtering and bucking about. I pulled over, checked everything visible, and started up again. With the car nearly stalling, I lurched it to a convenience store. That's when I realized what the problem was all along, the low fuel light bulb must've gone out. I put $20 in gas in it and drove home.
