I meant to post this a while ago when it happened but now Z-man has jogged my memory...
I was running my usual afternoon errands... zipping around San Pedro in my silver baby and I pull into my favorite Italian grocery. As I parallel park my car this old guy (I'm in my forties... an old guy to most of you I presume, so I don't mean any disrespect) anyway this guy gets out of his car, takes a long look at my car and as I'm getting out starts walking towards me. At this point I'm thinking uh-oh maybe I did some maneuver out on the boulevard that this gentleman did not approve of. But instead he keeps looking at my 944 and then says to me "you know I bought a 356 new from the dealer years ago and I used to drive it up to Mammoth ever weekend doing eighty all the way there and back... never should have sold that car." I said something lame like yea they sure make nice cars and we talked for a little while then went our separate ways.
Pulled into the Chevron station to gas up and check the air in the tires... old guy in a red 911 wearing a Hawaiian shirt (I was wearing a Hilo Tee-shirt) pulls in... He gives a sideways glance at my 944 and goes about gassing up... I try to make eye contact but he's focused on his car... his car is in immaculate condition... my car runs great but has more chips than Frito-Lay. He opens the trunk (hood? bonnet?) and starts looking at his engine, at this two of the attendants come over to check it out, I wander over to take a peek but the guy didn't see me... Maybe he was just too into his car to notice me, anyway if he was a snob I didn't want to push it so I took off.
There are allot of Porsches in Los Angeles but there are also allot of snotty bsatards however I try to wave when I can. There are four or more 944's in San Pedro however we are usually passing each other with such speed we don't have time to wave!
BTW I have met some very nice 911 guys here at the Pelican BBS so I definitely am not implying that 911 folks are snobs.
