Yes, I am asking about the factory original 6 or mildly updated versions thereof.

BTW, you have summarized my own experience quite well here, John! I have found a couple of promising cars in between the family heirloom and the rust bucket, but that's two cars after months of searching....

I also think you're right on about the need for a good, experienced mechanic (got one) and some DIY knowledge (got some, except when it comes to those two extra cylinders and those carburetor thingys) ;-)

Jim T, thanks for the advice. Your pack a lot of logic and good points into a few simple sentences. I'm definitely leaning towards the 6, and really hope the particular one I'm investigating right now will come to fruition.

Thanks as well to all the others who posted replies. Every bit of the info was useful.

Continued input welcome. I am particularly interested in hearing from others who have had both a 6 and a 4.
