53 designates the trailer's length. For most states, 53 is the maximum allowable length. The number below the 53 is the unit #. This one begins with the letter "R" which usually designates refrigerated van (aka "reefer"). This is a refrigerated van. The big box on the front of the trailer is the diesel powered refrigeration unit.
