I've got a mid-80's Trek 520. I bought it for just the reasons listed earlier.
- Chromoly frame which is tough as nails. Compared to most of the current road bikes -- it's a truck.
- The front fork has more spring then aluminum or carbon-fiber.
- Lug mounts for luggage racks and stuff.
- Used, it cost a heck of a lot less the lowest level of Trek road bike from their current range -- which didn't have the features I mentioned above.
