Testosterone (DHEA is a form of it) can convert to estrogen in a male, causing side effects such as gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue in men).
As for being grumpy, it's been shown that mood swings are more common in men with low-T levels more so that men with normal levels.
To the OP. I'd suggest to your friend to go get blood tests run for a complete profile of hormones, PSA etc. before taking anything. If the Testosterone levels are low in the range and all other indicators are fine, find a Doctor that is familiar with Testosterone therapy and get treated.
High levels of DHEA Testosterone is also what causes baldness and excessive hair growth depending on the person.
I've taken DHEA however would suggest getting regular testosterone (injections work best) rather than fool with DHEA. Frequent blood tests are impotant too while getting therapy.
