To really understand it, Hendog, read some about the history of England. What they were doing at different periods of time had an effect on the terminology.
As mentioned above, the term
United Kingdom is shortened from the official title
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
England is part of GB. GB is part of the UK.
