First time racing at the drag strip

Hey Everyone, Thought I would share my experience and get some pointers.

Last night I went with a buddy of mine to the local 1/8th mile drag strip. I was in my fairly stock '86 944 and he was in his '85 Supra, w/stock 2.7L (I think) 6cyl . What fun that was. I had never done this before. We actually went on the wrong night we thought it was "Test & Tune Night" so we could run each other a half a dozen times or so. Well come to find out their web site was wrong and they were bracket racing. OOPS. Well the pit guy was real nice and understanding and got us into a "Grudge Match" twice between different classes. Well keep in mind I have NEVER done this before, my buddy has but it had been years and he was in a different car.

First run: Totally F***ED up, Guess I didn't burnout enough after going through the water. GREEN Light and sat there and spun .

Stats: 1/8 Mile First Run
944----------------------------- Supra
+00.7428 Reaction +00.3305
3.3693 60 foot time 2.5337
12.2410 Elapsed Time 11.1733
62.307 Miles per hour 63.415

Second Run: Well this time I avoided the water and did not do a burnout. Did much better but still didn't launch correctly. However I had an Excellent reaction time for only my 2nd time running ever

Stats: 1/8 Mile Second Run
944----------------------------- Supra
+00.1978 Reaction +00.5143
3.0223 60 foot time 2.7739
11.8599 Elapsed Time 11.2660
62.835 Miles per hour 63.869

Now hear comes the questions... I realize we are not race car drivers however I was surprised we didn't get under 10 seconds. Well both of the car run (new with professional drivers) 0-60 in 8 to 9 seconds. Our top speeds were just a hair over 60mph. What gives???? Are we crappy drivers, cars 20 years old and tired, or my theory totally off. Also does anyone have any suggestions?
