It's fine if installed correctly (2 1/2 wraps, staying back 2 threads from the end, wrapped same direction as tightening) until the threaded connection is disassembled. Taking it apart causes thread slivers to get dislodged and can clog critical ports when re-assembled, even if you use more new tape.
Use a PTFE paste, teflon pipe dope. Use it sparingly. Put a little on the threads and wipe it all the way around and wipe off all excess. leave only enough dope to fill the roots of the treads around the middle. You won't have a sealing problem and you won't get crap where you don't want it.
