I don´t recomend you another 924 engine, this is avey old audi,amc engine.
I´m not sure but I believe that your tranny is a 4 forward speed ?

You can´t install a 944 engine, you need to change to a 944 drivetrain or a adapter plate.
The 944 is not cheap to mantain.

Drew1 idea is good and afordable solution. But always will be a hybrid, I have a 914 v6 chev engine and the car is fast and reliable but is not a Porsche, If you can live with this, there is not a problem. I´m not !

Another good idea is to install a vw 1.8 engine (golf or jetta).
If the money is not a problem you can buy a 951 trans and can isntall chevrolet v8 engine. (renegade hybrids or porschev).
