I forgot to tell you, I´m not sure but I believe that the vw 1.8 lts. fits on your tranny. if yes posibly the best and afordable solution.
with a cam headers (corsar,quantum,logitudinal) and progresive carb, cheap for this engine !.
A vw 2.0 liter is a better engine (crossflow head), but the problem is to find and Intake manifold for carb.

Probably you can find another 924 engine on ebay.

How bad is your engine ?
Do you recently buy the car wit damaged engine or the engine recently die ?
How bad is your injection, if is ok, go for a used 924, audi 100, amc gremlin engine.

You need to check your tranny bolt patern to know if vw group engine fits, I´m sure that yes, if yes you can use a lot of engines.
If not, The drew 1 idea v6 chevy with carb is 1 posibility.
