I'm writing a book on Boxsters right now (101 Projects for Your Porsche Boxster). I can tell you first hand that these are fantastic cars. They have their handicaps, but they are incredible value for the money these days. The 'S' model is the one to get, that extra power is really useful. We had my wife's 1999 2.5 out at the Streets of Willow last time, and it basically blew everything away with handling and power (even with the 2.5). It had a Tiptronic too, which made the whole track 10X easier to drive. The transmission actually adapted to the track and went to redline when you needed it. I was very, very, very surprised at how good the car actually was.

We're now building a super-Boxster for the track (911 engine, Tarrett sways, PSS9, Brembo brakes, etc.), and this thing will be a rocket! I'm betting a lot of resources on the fact that the Boxster (and 996) cars will be very good and well-sought after club cars and street cars for quite some time...
