To conclude this thread I am reporting the outcome:
The car is back from the mechanic. The electrical portion of the ignition switch failed. Part # 4A0905848B, $35.95 as listed on PP. The keys/reprogramming was a non-issue
Labor to remove and replace the ignition part, 1 hour.
I had the plugs changed as well just because I personally did not have the time...2.2 hours. THAT ONE HURT!
Just as an FYI, the plugs were shot at 45,000 miles.
Drive safe.
