A low pressure system such as a hurricane is air from the lower levels of the atmosphere being blown toward the upper levels. As a result, the air pressure at the ground is typically low. As Porsche-O-Phile correctly stated, the "coriolis effect" causes winds around these storms in the northern hemisphere to rotate counter-clockwise, and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

In Florida, if the storm hits the eastern shore of the state south of you, you have a hell of a lot more to worry about since the winds will be from the east, pushing the ocean up the shore and potentially flooding your house.
